History

Named in honor of Potawatomi Chief Keepataw, whose nomadic tribe settled in the region near what is now Lemont, the event began as a downtown Lemont festival in 1950, eventually adding a parade. Lemont was originally named Keepataw, then changed its name to Athens, then to Palmyra, before becoming Lemont in 1850.

The Lemont Keepataw Parade is organized by Lemont Keepataw Day, a registered, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. If you have questions or would like to join our committee, please email us at [email protected].
